Caring for veneered furniture & co. correctly:
How to keep wooden surfaces looking beautiful

Zülpich. Veneered furniture and the numerous other veneered surfaces around us showcase the beauty of one of the most sustainable materials on earth: wood. Regular care is required to preserve the radiance of the best that the forest has to offer. Here are a few tips from the Initiative Furnier + Natur e.V. (IFN) in Zülpich:

When it comes to veneered surfaces - including furniture, doors, wall and ceiling panelling, lighting and countless other everyday objects - there are two types that require individual care: open-pored and sealed. Open-pored refers to natural veneers or veneers that have been treated with open-pored wood glazes. These can be cleaned with appropriate care using a soft, clean and dry cloth. Microfibre cloths are not recommended here, as they can cause small scratches on the surface. A milk polish is a suitable care emulsion, which should be applied thinly with a new duster and spread without applying too much pressure. The situation is slightly different for veneers sealed with varnish, oil or wax, for example: these can be cleaned with a slightly damp cloth and then rubbed dry with another soft cloth - again without applying too much pressure. Here, too, it is important not to use microfibre cloths and to use milk polish sparingly, for example. All types of cleaning agents or, in the worst case, abrasive cleaners should never be used on wood. A final tip for cleaning veneer from IFN Managing Director Dirk-Uwe Klaas: "When cleaning wooden surfaces, speed is of the essence. The longer a fresh stain is allowed to affect the material, the more difficult it becomes to remove. That's why it's important not to waste any time, similar to cleaning up contamination caused by insects or birds on car paint, for example." IFN/DS

Initiative Veneer + Nature (IFN)
The Initiative Furnier + Natur (IFN) e.V. was founded in 1996 by the German veneer industry and its partners. Today it is supported by European companies from the veneer industry, the trade and the veneer processing industry as well as trade associations of the wood industry. The aim of the association is to promote veneer as a natural all-round material.
